Minimally Invasive Stabilization for Compression Fractures
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that may be considered for selected patients with painful vertebral compression fractures. During the procedure, a small balloon may be placed inside the fractured vertebra to create space. The balloon is removed, and bone cement is placed to help stabilize the bone.
The goal is to reduce pain related to the fracture and help patients return to daily activity when appropriate. Kyphoplasty is not right for every compression fracture.
Conditions This Treatment May Address
Kyphoplasty may be considered for painful vertebral compression fractures related to:
- Trauma or injury
- Osteoporosis
- Spinal tumors
- Other conditions that weaken bone
The procedure may be appropriate when pain clearly relates to a compression fracture and continues to interfere with movement, standing, walking, sleep, daily activities, or quality of life. The decision depends on fracture age and activity, location, symptoms, imaging findings, overall health, and whether nerve compression or instability requires additional treatment.
