Relief for Spinal-Narrowing Symptoms
Spinal stenosis is narrowing within the spinal canal that can place pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves. It may occur in the neck or lower back and can contribute to pain, numbness, weakness, balance concerns, radiating arm or leg symptoms, and walking difficulty.
Lumbar spinal stenosis may cause neurogenic claudication, a pattern of leg pain, heaviness, numbness, or weakness that develops with standing or walking and improves with sitting or bending forward.
Treatment Planning for Spinal Stenosis
Treatment is based on the location and degree of narrowing, symptoms, neurologic examination, imaging findings, previous care, overall health, and how the condition affects walking and daily activity.
For appropriately selected patients, minimally invasive ultrasonic laminectomy may be considered to remove the bone or ligament contributing to nerve compression. The procedure is performed through a small incision, typically about 1 to 2 inches in length. The goal is to relieve pressure on the affected nerves and improve symptoms when clinical findings support surgery.
